Common room Subcommittee Nominations
The CSSA is looking for 2-3 individuals to assist the committee in running the Common Room (N102). This means:
- you are given the code to the common room
- you can keep the room open as you please
- you get eternal love from grumpy cat
We are looking for people who are:
- can maintain a safe and welcoming atmosphere within the room
- act with minimal direction
Applying is super easy - fill out the form below. Applications will be open until 5pm Friday 30th May.
This time round, the committee will select from the applications. In the future, these positions will be filled at Annual General Meetings, along with the rest of the CSSA positions.
Postgrads, come and enjoy FREE finger food, cakes and drinks! Vegetarian/gluten free available.

We invite you to visit MakeHackVoid, Canberra’s very own hackerspace, with other CSSA and ESA members!
MakeHackVoid is a community-operated workspace that supports and encourages arts, science and technology culture in the ACT by providing a physical space for Canberra residents with common interests, often in computers, machining, technology, science, digital art or electronic art, to meet, socialise, collaborate and create.
The space has:
- Meeting areas with space for working on projects
- Electronics area with various soldering & desoldering tools, scopes and meters
- 3D printing & scanning, small scale CNC and large format plotter/cutter
- Machine area: Heavy benches, machine tools, etc
- Informal area, for chilling out on the couch
- Jetty and boat ramp!
- Amazing views of Lake Ginninderra
- Internet access
What: We will get a tour of the hackerspace, get to listen in on their maker meet where current projects are discussed, and of course we’ll have FREE PIZZA!

The hackerspace is located near Belconnen Interchange, but don’t worry if you don’t drive - we can meet outside CSIT to carpool there and there are also plenty of buses there from Barry Drive
the HDERP is back!
A few PhD students from CECS will give lightning talks about their research, and then you’ll be provided with a FREE Subway lunch!
Come along and see what your peers are working on and grab a bite to eat!

CECS Student Forum - CECS needs your input!
CECS will be holding a forum for all students in the College of Engineering and Computer Science next week. We are looking for your feedback on a number of issues, especially regarding the use of technology in the College (Wattle, Streams, CECS web presence), what works well for you as students and maybe not so well. This will be an informal conversation with Leanne Cambridge (CECS General Manager) and Paul Melloy (Student Services Manager).
We will be providing a turkish pizza lunch so please RSVP to Bindi so we can organise how much food to buy.

Casual Position Available - Programmer - Centre for Digital Humanities Research
The Australian National University
Starting date: July/August 2014. Initial duration: one month full-time or up to two months part time with potential extension
Description: The Centre for Digital Humanities Research is seeking to employ a programmer to work on the development of an online bibliographic and text database.
Some of the technical components of the projects include:
- Developing databases, search functions and web interfaces
- Importing data from spreadsheets or other file formats into databases
- Applying frameworks and design patterns in programming
- System testing
Desirable technical skills: MySQL, Postgresql, PHP Frameworks, System testing, CSS
